BELLYDANCE - is the westernized given name for 'Oriental Dance'. It is a dance form that originated in Egypt called Raqs Sharqi which means Oriental Dance. Women and girls of Egypt have been bellydancing for thousands of years at family gatherings, birthday parties, weddings and various celebrations. This original national dance of Egypt is called Balady. Currently mostly known as Bellydance - Raqs Sharqi or Oriental Dance is a modernized and fine-tuned version converted to suit and meet polished dance techniques and styling for professional and theatrical performances as well as show dance scenes around the world.
Even though Balady dance is performed wearing a full-covered dress called Gallabaya Oriental Dance is performed in a two-piece costume which reveals the midriff showing off the dancer’s feminine and graceful torso and hip movement. At present, however, we tend to see a variety of costume designs by famous designers from fully covered to midriff opened to suit dancers’ ethnicity and preference in the modern world. Oriental Dance has borrowed original technique, movement and steps mainly from Balady and other Egyptian folklore dances as well as western dance technique and styling to suit international standards since it has become a world famous iconic dance style.
